23) Types of portable flue gas analyser and pollution control equipment

Here are a few last thoughts to the matter. The simple purchase of an analyzer will not automatically mean that stack emissions monitoring will be carried out. There ia a necessity for training of personnel in many cases and air pollution equipment will also require maintenance and calibration. Regulations vary between countries, often there is a requirement for measurement of NOx emissions in one State and not in the next. A 5 gas analyzer must measure the correct 5 gases, otherwise it is really a 3 gas analyser in an expensive box! A Bacharach analyzer or Bacharach test will show the level of soot present in the gas and should, like all the tests, be carried out at normal operating conditions. The chemical analysis method may still be held as standard in many legislatures, but the days of the fyrite tubes are now very strictly numbered!

The portable infrared analyzer will definitely be here in a few years, although the modern electrochemical technology now gives very good accuracy. Even if ambient carbon monoxide detection is not yet one of your priorities, it may become essential in a matter of months and without warning, as has happened in a number of countries. An air pollution control device may be active or passive, depending on whether there is a possiblity of influencing the parameters of combustion. Air pollution control equipment such as filters, catalytic converters etc. will ideally require monitoring before and after the filter to ensure the efficiency and continued necessity of the filter. A flue gas analyser is a precision instrument and should be treated as such. At madur we all know that these stack emissions monitoring devices are used in less than ideal conditions, particularly the portable flue gas analysers. It is nevertheless simple protection of an investment to treat them as well as possible under the circumstances to be met in stack gas monitoring.
